Insurance for Weight Loss Surgery

Getting coverage for a weight loss surgery procedure can be a slow process as most insurance companies will require significant documentation proving that the procedure is a medical necessity. While only a formal pre-authorization can determine if your plan will cover you, we can help you verify your benefits ensuring that your policy does not exclude weight loss surgery. In order to make the insurance authorization process as smooth as possible we suggest that you collect any information relevant to your procedure before contacting your provider. Here are some items they may require:

  • Proof of multiple failed diet and exercise programs
  • A daily food, diet and exercise log
  • Evidence of obesity related diseases
  • A detailed list of medication currently being taken
  • A letter of medical necessity from your primary physician and our office

Don’t give up if your pre-authorization is denied. Make sure that you receive the reasons behind the denial in writing and coordinate with your healthcare professionals to create a response.

Insurance for Cosmetic Surgery

Most purely cosmetic procedures will not be covered by insurance. In some cases however, if a cosmetic procedure will alleviate a dangerous or life threatening condition, it is more likely to be covered. If you are unsure as to whether your cosmetic procedure will be considered a medical necessity, we suggest you contact our office as well as your insurance provider.
