GASTRIC SLEEVE

Gastric Sleeve Q&A

What is gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a procedure that removes around 85% of your stomach. A gastric sleeve doesn't alter your stomach function, other than reducing its capacity.

This procedure leaves you with a small vertical section of stomach that's about the size of a banana. The new stomach can hold about 60-150 cc, which is about one-tenth of what the stomach normally holds. With your new smaller stomach, you can eat far less and feel full.

How does a gastric sleeve procedure work?

Your surgeon creates a series of very small incisions in your abdomen. Through the top incision, They insert a laparoscope — a miniature video camera — through the top incision. The laparoscope sends images to a nearby screen.

Your surgeon inserts trocars — tools that hold miniature surgical instruments in place — into the other incisions. They watch the screen and then perform your procedure through those tiny incisions.

After removing the section of your stomach, your surgeon staples it into a sleeve. Your stomach still connects to your bowels in the same way as before.

Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics provides gastric sleeve procedures in their ambulatory surgery facility in Buckhead, so you can generally go home the day of your procedure.

What are the advantages of the gastric sleeve approach?

Gastric sleeve has some impressive advantages when compared to other types of bariatric surgery, including:

  • Fewer food restrictions
  • No risk of new intestinal issues like vitamin deficiencies
  • Reduced risk of ulcers
  • Reduced risk of cramping and diarrhea (dumping syndrome)

The Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics were the first to perform laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery as an outpatient procedure.

Is gastric sleeve right for me?

Gastric sleeve surgery may be right for you if you have a very high body mass index (BMI) or if you have conditions that prevent you from undergoing other types of weight-loss surgery. For example, if you have Crohn's disease, weight-loss procedures that reroute your small intestine can cause disease flare-ups, but gastric sleeve doesn't cause issues.

Some people also feel strongly about avoiding gastric bypass surgery or would rather not have a device (the Lap-Band®) in their body, in which case gastric sleeve could be the ideal solution.

Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics has the most experienced weight-loss surgeons in Georgia, which makes them the ideal specialists to trust for your gastric sleeve procedure. Call the office or click the provided booking link now.
