Revision Surgery Q&A

What is weight-loss revision surgery?

Weight-loss revision surgery is a procedure to revise a gastric bypass or gastric band following weight gain. Some people successfully lose a lot of weight immediately after their surgery, but then a few years down the road start to gain weight.

This type of procedure can correct any device or anatomical issues inhibiting successful weight loss to help you get back on track to a healthy weight and improved whole-body health.

Why is weight-loss revision surgery necessary?

You may need weight-loss revision surgery if you gain a significant amount of weight following your weight-loss surgery. This is not uncommon years after primary weight-loss surgery.

Some habits, like eating and drinking at the same time or eating too many carbohydrates, can stretch the stomach pouch or loosen the gastric band over time.

When your stomach can hold more, it's easy to fall back into the same habits that caused the weight problem in the first place. Unfortunately, this can lead to rapid weight gain along with obesity-related health problems like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Weight-loss revision surgery gives you a second chance to successfully lose weight and keep it off. Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics has a unique program focused on not only safely revising your surgery but also supporting you with long-term lifestyle modifications.

How does weight-loss revision surgery work?

There are two main types of weight-loss revision surgery, gastric band revision and gastric bypass revision.

Gastric band revision

Gastric band revision is for people who gain weight after Lap-Band surgery or another type of gastric band surgery. This procedure can vary with the situation. It may include simply replacing the band with a new one.

Another option for gastric band revision is gastric sleeve surgery, which creates a new, much smaller, stomach by removing about 85% of your stomach.

You can also opt for gastric band removal followed by gastric bypass surgery. In this procedure, your surgeon sections off part of your stomach and reroutes food to pass directly into the lower part of your small intestine. This reduces calorie absorption and thus helps you lose weight.

Gastric bypass revision

There are a few different options for gastric bypass revision. The most common is duodenal switch, which combines gastric sleeve surgery with a bypass procedure. This procedure combines restriction (a new much smaller stomach) with malabsorption to help you lose weight.

Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics performs one anastomosis gastric bypass, a duodenal switch that avoids a longer section of the small intestine than standard gastric bypass and creates a direct connection between the sleeve (stomach) and the small intestine.

Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics uses a proprietary gastric bypass revision technique that reduces pain and complication risks while still achieving the ultimate goals of restriction and malabsorption.
