Lap Band Surgery Q&A

What is Lap-Band surgery?

The Lap-Band is an adjustable medical device that can help you lose weight. When placed around the top part of your stomach, the Lap-Band limits how much you can eat, reduces your appetite, and slows the rate of digestion. All of these things contribute to sustained weight loss.

Is Lap-Band surgery safe?

Lap-Band surgery is FDA approved and is very safe. Lap-Band is the number-one gastric band in the world. Peachtree Surgical & Bariatrics uses the latest evolution of Lap-Band, which is the result of seven years of experience and research with the product.

Lap-Band surgery is so consistent and reliable that most people can have outpatient surgery in the ambulatory surgery center in Buckhead and go home that same day.

How does Lap-Band surgery work?

Lap-Band surgery is generally a laparoscopic procedure. You'll have a group of small incisions in the abdomen, and your surgeon inserts a biocompatible silicone ring that they tighten around the top part of your stomach.

This creates two different chambers, essentially making a new much smaller stomach where food goes when you eat. Your stomach's still in one piece, but the upper stomach has a greatly narrowed outlet to the lower stomach.

Your surgeon connects the Lap-Band ring to very thin tubing, which in turn connects to an access port. The access port goes just under your skin, in your abdominal wall.

Through the access port, your surgeon can use a special thin needle to inject or remove saline solution. This either tightens or loosens your Lap-Band based on the level of restriction you need. The Lap-Band adjustment process is very fast and causes little-to-no discomfort.

What are the advantages of Lap-Band surgery?

Some of the advantages of Lap-Band over other weight-loss surgeries include:

  • Doesn't alter or remove tissue (stomach or intestines)
  • Fewer dietary restrictions
  • Doesn't alter nutrient absorption
  • Adjustable with a quick office visit
  • Less recovery time
  • Reversible if needed

Lap-Band surgery offers good results, with steady average weight loss of a pound or two every week. But, it doesn't work as fast as gastric bypass surgery or gastric sleeve surgery.

If you have your Lap-Band removed, there's a high chance of gaining weight. Thus, it's meant to be a permanent procedure.
