Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery operation to remove excess fat deposits from different sites on the body in an effort to add contour or shape. Also known as lipoplasty or “fat modeling,” liposculpture, suction lipectomy or simply lipo, this procedure can be used to sculpt various areas, including the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, love handles, and backs of the arms.

Liposuction Cosmetic SurgeryThough liposuction can be done on many areas of the body, it is ultimately up to the patient and doctor to gauge how much fat can be removed safely in one session. Removing too much fat can create what looks like a lumpiness under skin, almost like dimples or dents. The more fat removed, or the more “over-suctioned,” the higher the surgical risk.

Liposuction may be performed under general or local anesthesia, and this choice of anesthetic is very significant with regard to the safety of the procedure. In addition to the amount of fat removed, the patient’s general health and type of anesthesia all contribute to how safe it can be. Patients need to have stopped smoking for several months and be as fit as possible leading up to the surgery.
