Acid Reflux (GERD)

Approximately 14 million Americans experience symptoms of GERD, including heartburn and esophageal inflammation, on a daily basis. Most manage their disease with medications such as H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Since pharmacological therapy does not treat the underlying causes of reflux – the deterioration of the antireflux barrier – life-long medication therapy is required. Although surgery is highly effective, it is also very invasive, despite being performed laparoscopically.

PSB is proud to offer the EsophyX™ system for chronic acid reflux and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This device is a sterile, single-use tool for performing endoluminal fundoplication procedures (ELF) which essentially reconfigures the tissue in the esophagus by creating valves that block acid reflux and reduce the incidence of hiatal hernias (where part of the stomach pushes up into the diaphragm), in the treatment of acid reflux.

Who Can Benefit From EsophyX?

  • Those who have not had success with pharmaceuticals.
  • Those who are experiencing heartburn or non-heartburn symptoms twice a week or more.
  • Those who do not wish to continue on medication in perpetuity.

Benefits
The EsophyX™ procedure is a novel surgical procedure and has shown great promise in the treatment of reflux disease. The ELF procedure is based on the principle of surgical repair of the junction between the esophagus and stomach and is intended to deliver similar benefits to the time-proven laparoscopic fundoplication.

The procedure reconstructs a strong anti-reflux barrier valve, restoring the gastroesophageal junction back to what is believed to be its natural state and geometry. ELF results in established parameters of antireflux surgery such as:

  • Omega-shaped, 270 degree, 3-5 cm in length
  • Restored angle of His
  • Use of proprietary fastener technology that mirrors results of proven surgical suturing technique
  • Reduction of hiatal hernia
  • Serosa-to-serosa fusion
