Body Lift
Depending on our body type, gender and age, our skin may not return to its normal state after pregnancy or weight loss. There is a cosmetic procedure however that can correct that in certain cases – the body lift. The body lift procedure is ideal for weight loss surgery candidates that have lost significant weight and now need to contour or shape their bodies. It may also be suitable after a pregnancy. The body lift is most commonly used to correct excess skin and sagging. Generally the body lift is performed as a lower or upper body lift targeting the buttocks, thighs and stomach or the breasts chest and back respectively. Sometimes, depending on an individual patient’s case, both an upper and lower body lift can be performed.
When to Undergo this Procedure
For those who have had bariatric surgery, it is advisable to wait until your surgeon gives you the OK. This may be up to two years after surgery. Patients will want to have maintained a steady weight for over 6 months and obesity related diseases should be improved or eliminated.
For pregnant women, this surgery is most effective when performed after the last child is born. A new pregnancy will only cause more stretching and excess skin.
Considerations
A body lift is advisable when the excess skin becomes painful or impedes normal functioning. Consider this procedure carefully as cosmetic surgery is still major surgery that requires hours in the operating room and a general anesthetic. Due to its nature as a cosmetic procedure, your insurance company is unlikely to cover the cost.
