While your body mass index, or BMI, is the quickest way to determine your eligibility for bariatric surgery, a number of tests have to be performed before we establish whether or not bariatric surgery is right for you. This testing will also help us offer advice on which procedure is most suited to your particular situation.
The tests conducted before you are cleared for surgery range from physical to psychological and most can be performed in one or two visits at our offices. Physical test may include heart, lung and kidney function as well as an assessment of your overall health. Each of these tests helps us ensure that the risks of surgery are sufficiently low. You will also visit with one of our psychologists and dietician to learn more about what to expect after surgery and to get a complete idea of your responsibilities over the longterm. During these meetings we will also assess whether or not you are ready to take on the challenges of the lifestyle change after surgery.
While these tests may seem tedious they are an important part of the success of the surgery and help us keep you safe and comfortable before, during and after your procedure. Further, we try to make sure that your diagnostic tests are combined into as few visits as possible.
To take the first steps on your weight loss surgery journey and to learn more about the process, we encourage you to attend one of our free weight loss surgery seminars held monthly in and around the Atlanta metro area.
